The Barn Owl

The Barn Owl Public House by mbf DESIGN

Gloucester Civic Award for The Barn Owlmbf DESIGN were appointed as project architect and lead design consultant to Marston’s PLC for the refurbishment, conversion and extension of a derelict listed barn.

The building consists of three elements; the oldest is a medieval crucifix barn and the other two date from late 18th to mid 19th century.  The barns sit within the curtilage of a Grade II Listed farm of late 15th century, the site of which is scheduled under the 1979 Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act.

mbf DESIGN were assigned to the project from RIBA stage D, post planning application but before planning approval was formally received.

The project required a very sensitive conservation approach coupled with imaginative problem solving for some of the detailing and modern interventions.  The process was tightly monitored by the conservation officer.  The original building fabric was retained as much as possible and often kept uncovered to express the rich character of the building which required a relaxing of some statutory regulations.

I was brought in during the planning process, after a submission was made, the original architect dropped out of the project  and the client contacted me directly.
